Once again the Großglockner beckons as the destination

KITZBÜHEL is not just a hub for the sports world during the Hahnenkamm race, in summer too events beckon in the Gamsstadt. The Kitzbühel Alpine Rally has established itself as one of the big summer events – for 27 years it has been one of the leading Classic Car events in Europe.

The dreamy backdrop of the Tirol mountains and the style of Gamsstadt makes the Alpine rally a very special old-timer rally, and also a meeting point for many prominent participants from the realms of racing, show business, business and sport.

New – Alpine Rally 2014, setting off in 30 second intervals

Not everything is new, but a great deal will be, at the Kitzbühel Alpine Rally 2014. The schedule is jam-packed and participants will set off at 30 second intervals for all the stages, along with more trials, new routes, new competitions. It has been a long cherished desire which will finally be implemented in the coming year – the 30 second interval for all participants. The advantages: shorter waiting times, more opportunities to meet other participants during the rally.

Dreamy routes through the Alps with the Großglockner provide the highlight

New, particularly attractive, routes await the 190 teams in 2014. The Großglockner high alpine road will once again be one of the highlights of the rally. From the lush meadows in early summer, you head up to 2400 metres altitude to Fuscher Törl, at the foot of the glacier-covered giant mountains around the Großglockner, which, at 3798 metres, is the highest mountain in Austria. The Saturday stage this year goes to Outer Zillertal and through the medieval old town of Rattenberg.

New construction year limits – but a tried and tested competition system

Once again this year classics built in 1985 which have covered 590 kilometres are permitted to take part. This means that the rally is abiding by the FIA regulations for historic competitions. For years this system has had two separate assessments – depending on sporting objectives. The Alpine rally Sport Trophy (with GPS recording) is the variant for all rally enthusiasts for whom one thing matters - victory. In contrast, the Classic Trophy is the pleasure version, where the motto is being taking part is everything. The prestigious Sepp Greger mountain trophy once again beckons for the winner of the mountain classification.

Oldtimer Curiosities on the start line

Rare automobiles from seven decades will be on display at the Alpine rally from the numerous old-timer aficionados – open-top racing cars from the pre-war era, elegant coupés, roadsters and limousines from the 50s and 60s, along with selected rare cars from earlier automobile history. More than 25,000 historic horsepower provides inspiration for fans year in, year out.

Since 2011 a great contingent of cars from the Volkswagen group have been represented year in, year out at the Alpine rally.. The vehicles come from its works collections in Wolfsburg and Osnabruck – and bear witness to the superb automobile past of the Volkswagen business which is a global leader today.

At the moment, two of the works Beetles will be there – a 1200 “Herbie”-the car from the 1960 film and a 1302 cabriolet from 1973. There are also two rare Karmann Ghia types – a 14 type made in 1974 and its successor, only distributed in South America, the TC 145 from 1975. Along with Volkswagen themselves, there will also be VW Group brands: Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche and Skoda, with selected classic automobiles on show at the 27th Kitzbühel Alpine rally.
